In addition to the percentage of calories, fats, or sugars, for many it is necessary to know what is contained in the dish also for any <strong>allergies or intolerances<\/strong>.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So keeping track of what we eat is important to have a healthy diet, but is it always feasible?  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that technology has helped to overcome this problem in this case as well. How so?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  Have you ever heard of <strong>food scanners<\/strong>?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_825  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 10 years ago, the telephony giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nokia.com\/it_it\/\">Nokia<\/a> designed <strong>Morph<\/strong>, the first mobile device made using nanotechnology, which allows the physical properties of nanostructures and devices to be controlled with the precision of a single molecule and to be invisible to the human eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morph is characterized by an innovative ductility, flexibility and strength that make it ready to change shape and appearance at any time, it can be wrapped or bent and always works the same way.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it does not need to be cleaned, it will always look like it has just been bought, again thanks to <strong>nanotechnology<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_video et_pb_video_5\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_video_box\"><iframe title=\"Nokia Morph Concept Mobile Phone (full)\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Aw2yiOhsFsc?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_826  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, several companies have been involved in creating different versions of <strong>food scanners.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, the European Commission awards a prize for innovation in food scanners. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/research-and-innovation\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/prizes\/horizon-prizes\/food-scanner_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u20ac1 million Horizon prize was divided into three parts: \u20ac800,000 to the winner, <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectralengines.com\/news\/food-scanner-award-winning-technology-platform-combines-compact-cost-efficient-portable-analyzer-and-cloud-computing-to-create-meaningful-intelligence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spectral Engines<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and \u20ac100,000 each to the two runners-up, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerphysics.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCiOscan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tellspec.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tellspec<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The challenge posed for this \u20ac1 million award was to develop a cost-effective, non-invasive mobile solution that would allow users to measure and analyse their food intake.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all three cases, the molecular scanners are based on similar technologies. They examine food with light and observe how it interacts with objects. This data is then sent to the cloud which analyzes it and reports information on the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_827  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the winners is the work of SCiOscan, in collaboration with a Chinese company, which has designed <strong>Changhong H2<\/strong>, the first smartphone to have an integrated <strong>NIR spectrometer<\/strong> . The sensor, in addition to giving information on food, also allows you to analyze more sensitive objects such as medicines, to unmask any fakes. Not only that, the sensor can also be pointed at our body to have a measure of the state of hydration and the percentage of fat mass, with an estimate of these values that the manufacturer declares more precise than that of scales with electrical impedance measurement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the NIR laser also gave rise to another project, put in place by researchers at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iosb.fraunhofer.de\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fraunhofer IOSB<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the user is able to receive information about the <strong>shelf life of the products<\/strong>. The scanner sends the measured data via Bluetooth to a database in the cloud for analysis.
